So what is Tea Tree Oil? Tea Tree Oil is derived from the leaves of the Melaleuca Alternifolia plant, which is species of tall shrub or tree native to Australia. The oil is made by taking the biomass (basically taking the shrub and breaking it down into a substance similar to mulch) and placing it into distillation bins to carefully extract the oil from the plant.
Now that we know what Tee Tree oil is, let us talk about what it does and how it can be used. Tea Tree Oil is known for its amazing antibacterial and anti-fungal fighting properties. It is traditionally used on the skin to fight off acne, bacterial infections, and fungal infections. This list just doesn’t end there, here are a few things you can use this oil for:
- Acne prevention
- Acne Scars
- Chickenpox
- Eczema
- Cold Sores
- Head Lice
- Dandruff
- cuticles
- Infected Cuts
- Bug bites
- Deodorant
- Household cleaning
- Helps remove mold
The list goes on and on. One of my favorite uses is to prevent acne and for my eczema on my arms. I recommend using “Grease Lightening” by Lush for these particular problems.
It is VERY IMPORTANT when buying Tea Tree Oil to buy it in a dark container, preferably glass, and store it in dark dry areas. This will help the shelf life of the oil. Also, always be sure that the Tea Tree Oil is mixed with another type of oil. For example, the Lush product above is Tea Tree Oil and Aloe Gel.
For fungal infections, you may want to try a Tea Tree Oil mixed with Oregano Oil. For Hair problems such as Lice or Dandruff go for Tea Tree Oil and Lavender Oil, Aragon Oil or Coconut Oil, for dry damaged hair. When using as a household cleaner look for Tea Tree Oils mixed with Lemon Oils and simply add a little vinegar.
When using Tea Tree Oil on skin use small amounts and rub it smoothly and evenly around your face, scalp or cuticles. For household cleaners use just as you normally would to clean of countertops, ovens and appliances. For mold, simply spray it on troubled area, even in your toilet or on shower curtains to kill off the mold. For cuts, be sure to clean the infected area first, then place a little tea tree oil onto the cut before placing the band-aid on top. For odor problems like stinky sneakers, add two drops to the souls of the inside of the shoe to help eat away bad odor.
Tea tree oil is an amazing antibacterial essential oil every family should have in their home.
